| | Eric Hutchinson - Rock & Roll | ] | In lieu of the old charts, I've got this. I've maintained opinions enough to name number one songs for every month this year. That's about it. All of these things happen to be 2007 songs that were released as singles and had videos and whatnot, so they were actually even current during the respective months.
Here goes:
Number Ones for 2008 Months June: Rock & Roll - Eric Hutchinson May: Say (All I Need) - OneRepublic April: Believe - The Bravery March: Shadow of the Day - Linkin Park February: From Where You Are - Lifehouse Janaury: Stop and Store - OneRepublic
Here's the video that recently landed for "Rock & Roll," a song that caught my attention when Eric closed his set with it December:

This may be the final top 40. I haven't decided yet. If nothing else, its relevance will fade. I've made the decision that out of respect for my mother, I'm not downloading music recorded after her death. 2008 shouldn't be, and I certainly shouldn't do things to support its existence.
Furthermore, I turned off the radio this week here in Altoona and I'm done with Top 40 radio. I'm fed up with what it has become. After some research, I discovered that it's Chris Brown whose utter crap that was gracing the airwaves made me turn off that station for good. (Interestingly, the oldies station has phased out '50s in '50s/'60s/'70s and replaced it with '80s and I've found myself more tolerant of that than I was in years past. The '80s certainly were better times.) Also, WBOS, the best radio station ever, also died this month.
Finally, I spent many hours over many months developing a wonderful MySQL database to track these charts. In keeping with every aspect of my life fighting me, MySQL cannot be found on my computer any more. This makes no sense. But I'm giving up. I admit defeat.
So, have the chart. I almost had it posted on Friday for once, but wrote it up in a text editor and forgot to paste it over. I'll decide later whether this is the last one or I'll keep it going for a while. (That recurrents thing I tried before was short-lived; maybe the whole thing will turn into that.) It doesn't seem to matter much anymore either way. (The top ten of this one's about all that I cared much about as it is.)

[EDIT] Made public for history's sake after posting of most recent. Still majorly pissed at loss of mysql. Not about to tempt fate and screw with the computer and try to fix that now.
Couldn't post this before. It's way late now. I don't expect anyone else to care and I'm a failure for doing it late, so I'm just going to leave it private. The database disappeared, so maybe I should stop bothering. Stuff that brought me happiness once is futile now.

Let's take care of this before it ends up happening much later. If you look at this and you think it looks like I put barely any effort into anything beyond the top 10, you'd be right. There are bigger things to worry about.
Partly due to its wonderfulness and its rise over the past few weeks since its debut, partly due to the emotions of the past few weeks, and partly due to Friday's devastating loss, we have a new #1 from Lifehouse. It's also one of the rare times I will publicly dedicate a song. This one is for my beloved mother. You will be missed. I'm sorry I can't personally share it with you.
Despite being bumped back a notch, OneRepublic's runner-up track remains extremely strong and I heard it on a few different radio stations this week. The band's concludes 10 consecutive weeks of a stronghold on #1 with three different tracks.
The chart:
01. From Where You Are - Lifehouse 02. Stop and Stare - OneRepublic 03. Say (All I Need) - OneRepublic 04. Oh! - Eric Hutchinson 05. Apologize - OneRepublic 06. Shadow of the Day - Linkin Park 07. so far away from where you are these miles have torn us worlds apart and i miss you yeah, i miss you
so far away from where you are i'm standing underneath the stars and i wish you were here
i miss the years that were erased i miss the way the sunshine would light up your face i miss all the little things i never thought that they'd mean everything to me
yeah, i miss you and i wish you were here
i feel the beating of your heart i see the shadows of your face just know that wherever you are yeah, i miss you and i wish you were here
i miss the years that were erased i miss the way the sunshine would light up your face i miss all the little things i never thought that they'd mean everything to me

[Actually compiled several hours ago...5 or 6 or 7, I don't really remember]
Let's break this out again. I'm bored in the hospital waiting room and
paperkingdoms completely stumped me with her version if this, so here's mine. The idea is first lines, it's pretty much what my iPod gave me, but I skipped stuff that didn't get radio airplay or gave away the title in the first line. This one seems to have a bit of a retro feel to it. (after I said that, it gave me two current songs...) Comment with answers...
1. Well it's not far down to paradise. At least it's not for me.
2. I have climbed highest mountains. I have run through the fields...
3. Give me the song and I'll sing it like I mean it.
4. Kissing like a bandit stealing time underneath the sycamore tree
5. I am driving up 85 in the kind of morning that lasts all afternoon
6. They made up and they started packing. They left before the sun came up that day.
7. There's nothing you can do that can't be done, nothing you can sing that can't be sung
8. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out
9. Hello again. It's you and me, kinda always like it used to be
10. All around the big bad world on CIA machine
11. Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
12. Last night I had the strangest dream. I sailed away to China...
13. I'm holding on your rope. Got me ten feet off the ground.
14. Baby girl like cinnamon, hot for the skin he's in
15. It's alright to tell me what you think about me
16. There's a calm surender to the rush of day
17. Slip inside the eye of your mind. you know you might find a better place to play?
18. Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry, you don't know how lovely you are
19. She said it's cold outside and she hands me a raincoat
20. Look around, could it bring somebody down if I never made a sound again? |

| The Newspaper Collection |
[Jan. 21st, 2008|10:12 pm] |
| [ | music |
| | Something Corporate - You're Gone | ] | This was inspired by gooseypoo calling me during a flight layover in Detroit, asking me if I had a newspaper from there. I didn't think so. But I looked. I didn't. I've been planning to make this list for some time, so, here it is.
To clarify, what I collect is just the bannerhead of the newspaper (the part with the title, date, where it's published, etc., from the front page. This started in 8th grade when my English teacher offered extra credit for bringing them in. I had the same teacher as the newspaper advisor in 9th grade and so I collected up a bunch more over the summer. I got to keep the collection at the end of 9th grade and I've kept it going ever since, picking up newspapers wherever I go. I've had some help from friends (including some who'll read this -- thanks!) and various people I knew in college. (I remembered people I'd completely forgotten when I recorded their hometown newspapers in making this list.)
( The Newspaper List is behind the cut... )
I did find a printout of an old spreadsheet I'd made with all the newspapers sometime in high school. It was easier to start from scratch than to dig in the basement for the floppy, find something to stick the floppy into, convert it from MS Works to Excel, etc., etc.
I didn't proofread or anything. I scanned to eliminate duplicates. There may be typos. I caught 3 in posting this. If you read and catch 'em, let me know. |

[Jan. 12th, 2008|11:24 am] |
This week brings a new #1. Like the last time that happened, OneRepublic replaces itself at the top of the chart. "Stop and Stare," the official second single, becomes the third #1 here, marking the eighth consecutive week the band has topped the chart with something from Dreaming Out Loud. This is the fifth week that "Stop and Stare," "Say (All I Need)," and "Apologize" -- in some permutation -- have had control of the top three. But, the connection goes further: there's a link to the rest of the top five. Blake Lewis, of American Idol fame, cracks the top five this week with his first original single. "Break Anotha" was produced by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. Then Eric Hutchinson, who I know because he's touring with 1R, scores his first top five track with "Oh!" this week.
It's also worth noting that the Eagles make their return to the top 10 this week after a 13-year absence. The band last reached the top ten with 1995's "Love Will Keep Us Alive," which went to #2. Lifehouse also makes an impressive return to the chart with "From Where You Are."
Have a chart:
01. Stop and Stare - OneRepublic 02. Say (All I Need) - OneRepublic 03. Apologize - OneRepublic 04. Break Anotha - Blake Lewis 05. Oh! - Eric Hutchinson 06. Over You - Daughtry 07. Here goes... commentary will be very quick...
OneRepublic's stranglehold on the top of the chart remains extremely strong. This is week 5 for "Apologize" at #1. "Say" isn't any weaker; it's that now-official-second-single "Stop and Stare" keeps surging forward that causes the 2<-->3 switch.
Meanwhile, Blake Lewis' first non-American Idol single breaks through to the top 10.
New music comes from Eric Hutchinson, who impressed me opening for OneRepublic a few weeks ago. I finally remembered to download the ones I remembered on iTunes. Then we have a new track from Brandi Carlile's The Story, which I recently acquired, and a new track from Plain White Ts that I saw performed on New Year's Eve TV.
That's it. No time for recurrents or flashbacks or anything more now, but maybe I'll edit later. Have a chart:
01. Apologize - OneRepublic 02. Stop and Stare - OneRepublic 03. Say (All I Need) - OneRepublic 04. Over You - Daughtry 05. Wonderful World - James Morrison 06. Keeper - Yellowcard 07. Home - Daughtry 08. Break Anotha - Blake Lewis 09. Shine - Take That 10. All Fall Down - OneRepublic

| The Full Top 100 of 2007 |
[Dec. 31st, 2007|12:04 am] |
Along with the top ten of the year, there is, of course, a much bigger list. Here are my top 100 songs. This comes from the weekly top 40 charts and includes the radio singles and the album tracks all mixed together (and so you also get some stuff that's a few years old but which I discovered or was listening to a lot this year too, although it's safe to assume that things like "All At Sea," which charted in '04, are here because of live releases). Week counts and peaks are for the full time the songs spent on the chart in 2007 and prior.
Enjoy...

| #1 of 2007: going to the place where love and feeling good don't ever cost a thing... |
[Dec. 31st, 2007|12:00 am] |
#1 HOME Daughtry
i'm staring out into the night trying to hide the pain i'm going to the place where love and feeling good don't ever cost a thing and the pain you feel's a different kind of pain
i'm going home back to the place where i belong and where your love has always been enough for me i'm not running from no, i think you've got me all wrong i don't regret this life i chose for me but these places and these faces are getting old so i'm going home i'm going home
the miles are getting longer, it seems the closer i get to you not always been the best or friend for you but your love remains true and i don't know why you always seemed to give me another try
i'm going home back to the place where i belong and where your love has always been enough for me i'm not running from no, i think you've got me all wrong i don't regret this life i chose for me but these places and these faces are getting old
be careful what you wish for 'cause you just might get it all you just might get it all and then some you don't want...
This is it: the #1 song of the year. I guess that means this write-up ought to be really good. Here goes.
I guess American Idol's impact has reached my charts. I watched a few times when Chris Daughtry was on the show and was generally impressed with what I'd heard, particularly his take on Fuel's "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)." (Since we're doing year-end charts here, that was #28 of 2000.) I'm surprised he didn't win, but I didn't ever bother voting before this year, so I can't say too much. It was the live performance of "Home" during this year's season finale that introduced me to the song.
In terms of the weekly top 40, "Home" entered the charts the week of May 28, after the American Idol finale. It slowly moved up the chart before reaching the top 5 the week of July 13. It spent three weeks at #1, 21 weeks in the top 10, and 32 weeks on the chart.
Just about every line in the song has rung true at some point this year. That opening verse is golden. I could go on with my personal interpretation of the lyrics, but I won't.
There is always something good to be said for going home, whatever the circumstances in life -- good or bad -- are. It's become a personal tradition of mine to play this song sometime while I'm driving on Interstate 99 on the way into Altoona, but usually a few times. It's usually once the "Altoona Exits: Plank Road, Frankstown Road, 17th St" sign comes into view that it has to come on. (I wanted to put a picture in here, but attempts to make that happen didn't work.)
There was also the time I spent two weeks for training in Illinois this summer and played this song A LOT, especially as going home got closer to being a reality. There it wasn't really home; it was just getting back to DC. During these training sessions, there were large group meetings and there was usually music playing as they started and ended. I was thinking "Home" would be appropriate for the final one. I don't think I smiled more during those two weeks than when it happened.
Obviously, it's Daughtry's biggest success of the three songs in the top 100. The first single, "It's Not Over," finishes the year at #98. Follow-up "Over You" has been rather successful at the end of the year, reaching the top five and finishing the year at #71.
I'll wrap up with a link to the video. |

| Top Songs of '07: now there's no place else i could be... |
[Dec. 29th, 2007|07:41 pm] |
Continuing with the top 10 songs of 2007... as Casey Kasem used to say, we're just a hit away from #1, but first...
#2 HERE (IN YOUR ARMS) Hellogoodbye
i like where we are when we drive in your car i like where we are here
'cause our lips can touch and our cheeks can brush our lips can touch here
when you are the one the one that lies close to me whispers, "hello, i've missed you quite terribly" i fell in love in love with you suddenly now there's no place else i could be but here in your arms...
A pop song. A love song. Simple as that.
Damn catchy. That which inspires playing over and over and over and over. That which energizes.
When I first heard this song and it shot to #1 during its second week on the chart in September of '06, I never would've expected it to have such longevity. It ended up charting for 57 weeks, spending three weeks at #1 last year and reentering the top 10 four times. But it's good, so good in fact that it is what it is: the second-best song of 2007.
Now as I write this, I think I'll repeat it a few more times, because that's what you do with this song.
Have the official music video featuring Camp Holadios (get it?).
-----
That leaves just the #1 song of the year. To recap, we've had: 10. Undeniable - Mat Kearney 09. Carousels (Dreaming of Tomorrow) - Alamoth Lane 08. One Wish - Roxette 07. Don't Stop Believin' - Brian Kent 06. Shadows and Regrets - Yellowcard 05. Nothing Left to Lose - Mat Kearney 04. Read My Mind - The Killers 03. Time Won't Let Me Go - The Bravery 02. Here (In Your Arms) - Hellogoodbye
To recap further, let's have the last 5 years of #1 songs: 2006: Move Along - All-American Rejects 2005: What About Everything? - Carbon Leaf 2004: Ocean Avenue - Yellowcard 2003: Swing Swing - All-American Rejects 2002: The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
What could possibly outrank Hellogoodbye's signature song? Find out... soon... (I'll gladly solicit guesses but will do nothing to indicate rightness or wrongness unless you pick something that's already in the top 10.) |

i never had a summer of '69 never had a cherry valance of my own all these precious moments you promised me would come in time so where was i when i missed mine?
As I was preparing to write this, I was reminded of the feud between The Bravery and the somewhat-similar-sounding Killers, whose "Read My Mind" was featured yesterday at #4. Both land singles in the top 5 of the year and both have CDs that spent some time in my car's CD visor (perhaps a metric for how much I like a CD as a whole). There's no question that "Time Won't Let Me Go" is my favorite Bravery song. (Follow-up single "Believe" is the second favorite.)
Radio gets the credit for this one. I think it was DC 101. I was on the way back to PA from seeing Hellogoodbye with Boys Like Girls and The Rocket Summer (all of whom land some tracks in the top 50 of the year) with gooseypoo and made him write down the song title because I liked it that much. The following Friday, it debuted on the chart at #10. It went to #1 the following week, where it stayed for 5 weeks total (with one week off near the end of its run). It has spent 19 weeks in the top 10 and 34 weeks in the top 40.
The music is catchy and evokes a bit of a retro feel. The lyrics are great, and fitting for a year that's not been without its share of disappointments. Kudos to writer and vocalist Sam Endicott for referencing Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" in this one too.
This one also boasts my favorite music video of the year. It impresses me every time I see it. The video features Guinness world record card stacker Bryan Berg building houses out of cards. Check out the video and be impressed. |

| Top Songs of '07: can you read my mind? |
[Dec. 27th, 2007|07:00 pm] |
On with the top 10 of the year...
#4 READ MY MIND The Killers
on the corner of main street just trying to keep it in line you say you wanna move on and you say i'm say i'm falling behind can you read my mind? can you read my mind?
i never really gave up on breaking out of this two-star town i got the green light i got a little fight i'm gonna turn this thing around...
In 2004, the Killers first scored a number one hit and the #10 single of the year with "Somebody Told Me." I'd been pleased with what I'd heard on Hot Fuss and new single "When You Were Young," which landed on the charts in October 2006 (and was 2007's first #1 and finishes the year at #14). So, I sampled Sam's Town in Borders on one of those Satruday roadtrips that were so common during my days in York. I'm not sure if it was a random choice or if one of those labels on the CD cover hinted at it (you know, "featuring ___ and ___," usually the current and future singles), but I instantly went for "Read My Mind" and the line about breaking out of this two-star town and turning this thing around instantaneously sank in. I bought the CD based on the song and the rest is history. (The rest, by the way, was good, but not this good.)
"Read My Mind" went on to spend 7 weeks at #1: two in November 2006 as an album track and 5 in March and April once the song had gone to radio. It spent 32 weeks in the top 10 and 43 weeks overall in the top 40.
I still have yet to decide whether I like this or "Somebody Told Me" better, but they're certainly my two favorite Killers songs.
Check out the official "Read My Mind" video.
Then check back soon for the top three songs of the year... |

| Top Songs of '07: push the pedal down, watch the world around fly by us... |
[Dec. 26th, 2007|10:50 am] |
On with the top 10 songs of the year...
#5 NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE Mat Kearney
something's in the air tonight the sky's alive with a burning light you can mark my words something's 'bout to break and i found myself in a bitter fight where you felt my hand through the darkest night don't know where you're coming from but you're coming soon to a kid from oregon by way of california all of this is more than i've ever known or seen c'mon and we'll sing like we were free push the pedal down watch the world around fly by us c'mon and we'll try one last time i'm off of the floor one last time to find you and here we go there's nothing left to choose and here we go there's nothing left to lose
It debuted on the top 40 the first week of July 2006. It spent 8 weeks at #1 last year and was the #4 song of 2006. It hung around for a total of 67 weeks. That included 36 weeks in the top 10 and 17 weeks in the top 5. This last well into 2007, which would explain how it ends up finishing a second year in the top 5 of the year. That's no small feat, but it has been done before by "What About Everything?" and "Name."
"Nothing Left to Lose," of course, was the single that launched Mat Kearney. While I claim it's his best song, there's quite a bit of good music on the album of the same name.
